"
Show me your ways, O Lord, teach me your paths; guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God and my Savior, and my
hope is in You all day long." Psalms 25:4-5
Today in our homeschool we talked about synonyms in language and multiples of 5 in math for my first grader. Daddy
came home for lunch and asked him what he had learned that day and he said nothing. My daughter chimed in with, "I
guess you need to go to public school then." His reply was a simple "I wouldn't learn nothing there
too." Trying to defend my teaching skills I asked him, "What is a multiple of 5." His quick and
sure response was "symomyms" (meaning synonyms). Jason and I burst out laughing and he looked completely surprised
not sure why that was so funny. Of course with a little prodding I was able to get him to explain what synonyms were,
and what the multiples of 5 are.
This reminded me of the follow verses: James 1:22-25 "Do not merely
listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what is says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it
says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror, and after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what
he looks like. But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting
what he has heard, but doing it - he will be blessed in what he does."
My son did not intently take in
my lessons on synonyms and multiples of 5 and he didn't immediately put what he learned into action and he forgot them.
How often are we doing that with God's word. We can't just hear the word, we have to put into action what we
have studied. If we study God's word on a consistent basis, we should be seeing changes in ourselves in our thoughts
and actions. When we obey and follow His commands, He promises we will be blessed.
So as the Nike
slogan says "just do it." Don't just be a hearer be a doer!
